Squared Sketch for Fresco with Flying Angels, 48 x 43 cm
Preparatory study for a fresco or altarpiece, depicting two winged putti in flight. The sheet is entirely squared, serving as a proportional guide for transferring the composition to a wall or canvas. The scattered paint stains on both recto and verso testify to the practical use of the sheet in the studio or even on site. The quality of the drawing and the confident hand suggest the direct involvement of an experienced painter rather than a student.
The sheet comes from the studio of painter Luigi Guglielmino, a well-known pupil and collaborator of Enrico Reffo (Turin, 1831–1917), and belongs to the circle of these two artists.
Enrico Reffo was one of the leading figures of Italian religious painting between the 19th and 20th centuries. A teacher of many artists at the Consolata Mission Institute, he was known for his learned, idealized drawing style, always attentive to anatomy and the spiritual expression of sacred figures. His Turin-based studio was active in the decoration of churches throughout Piedmont and other Italian regions.
