Antique Openwork Brass Ewer, Height 47 Cm, 19th Century Kashmir Art, Collection

Ewer with pear-shaped body on a pedestal.
Featuring a cast brass handle, a ribbed spout topped with a bronze feline, cat or tiger head, and covered with a faceted fretel dome. At the top of the handle, a small red copper snake rises towards the fretel.
The entire object is made of openwork bronze decorated with plants, trees of life, interlacing and friezes.
# A boat decoration appears many times on the ewer: It is there to symbolize the transport of souls in the rite of passage to the other world. The Hindu lunar boat transports souls into the new incarnation. It is associated with lunar cycles and the goddesses of the Moon who hold the power of life and rebirth, by which immortality is conferred on the individual. Under this decoration, made like a chainmail cut and curved with dexterity for this entire piece, hides a copper container receiving the water from the ablutions. This ewer was and is mainly used for ablutions, washing the face and hands, during religious ceremonies.Unique collector's item.Provenance: Kashmir, India, 19th century.## Purchase from a collection in the USA" The feast of the initiates, standing ready to serve, the beauties from all sides hold the ewer in their hands; the times of love wash their hands with all their souls; while the beauties pour the water, the ewer in hand "Reading and translation, AS Melikian-Chirvani, 1973 p 119.from the 19th century and in good condition.
