"1370/1380 - Workshop Of The Master Of The Magi Of Fabriano - Linden - Enthroned Madonna With Ch"
Extraordinary Madonna Enthroned with Child, a linden sculpture from the workshop of the Master of the Magi of Fabriano, third quarter of the 14th century.
The sculpture features the characteristics of central Italian Gothic, with typical influences from France, such as the crown.
Under the chromium and chalk (present only in minimal traces), the carving is hard and decisive but does not hide the extreme refinement of the lines and shapes, which between Umbria, Abruzzo and Marche is rendered with a thick chalk finish.
In our example, given the extraordinary quality, this refinement can be contemplated very well without the chalk finish.
The Virgin's face, despite its hieratic nature, appears sweet thanks to the lines of the eyes and the face, which is framed by a splendid veil from which, in the upper part, two locks of hair emerge.
Standing on his legs, the Child holds a bird in his hand and presents a serious but involved, present expression. The drapery of the clothes is characteristic of the workshop of origin and shows an exceptional quality in the rendering.
The throne is simple and square.
The sculpture, thanks to very thick layers of plaster that, more or less original, have always protected it from external agents and woodworms, is in overall excellent condition.
Only one lack on the right arm of both the Virgin and the Child, in addition to a lobe of the central element of the crown that has however been replaced.
The sculpture, with its distinctive features of a manufacture that has translated the Gothic style from France into a more rustic, elaborate and heterogeneous language, is therefore presented as an excellently preserved example of very high quality.
