Pewter Wine Pitcher - Rouen, 18th Century

Artist: Jean Baptiste Peuffier

Small pewter PITCHER with shoulder, plinth foot, straight heel cup and acorn thumb.
Control hallmark: CC crowned / ROUEN / 1778.
Hallmark of Jean-Baptiste PEUFFIER received master in 1742: crowned hand / IBP / (1742).
Gauging hallmark: lily / PH / grain.
Height: 19 cm.
ROUEN, From the year 1778

In very good condition and completely hallmarked.
The royal edict of 1691 establishing the control hallmark was, in Rouen and unlike many French production centers, relatively well respected. In the case of this pitcher, the vintage control of 1779 being listed allows it to be dated very precisely to 1778.
As for the control of the gauging, it made it possible to certify that the pitcher was suitable for serving wine and that it offered "good measure" to the consumer. The controllers-gaugers were appointed either by the royal power or by the local ecclesiastical authority.
