About
Born in Istanbul in 1931, Albert Bitran moved to Paris at the age of 17 to study architecture. He quickly abandoned this path to devote himself to painting, but retained a geometric rigor inherited from his training.
Bitran developed a visual language in which black occupies a central place—a motif deeply linked to his Istanbul origins. He stated: “In truth, the most important color is black. I come from black...”
In this “Composition,” kraft paper serves as a raw medium, highlighting the contrasts between the luminous areas of blue and ochre and the energetic black lines that structure the composition.
A constructed organization, playing between abstraction and the suggestion of forms. The superimposition of materials and the energy of the brushstrokes convey a search for dynamism and depth. A subtle balance between perfectly mastered gestural freedom and plastic rigor.
This work will be included in the catalogue raisonné currently being prepared by Hélène de Panafieu-Bitran, Mariane Spang-Hanssen-Bitran, and Clotilde Scordia.
