About
James Pichette (1920-1996), a French painter born in Châteauroux, began painting during a stay in a sanatorium, influenced by the hardships of war.
After an initial Cubist work in 1947, he adopted a lyrical style, influenced in particular by Fernand Léger. His work then evolved towards structured compositions in vibrant colors, marked by the appearance of circles. He has been widely exhibited in France and abroad, and his works feature in numerous public collections.
An energetic and gestural composition dated 1968. Created in gouache on paper, it features a play of cobalt blue and vermilion red colors—with accents of deep black—organized in dynamic, superimposed strokes.
This work is part of the lyrical abstraction movement. The gesture is free, expressive, almost calligraphic. The composition evokes movement, tension, and balance. Each color seems to vibrate independently while interacting with the others, creating a harmonious and powerful work.
The work is signed in the lower right corner, indicating a personal connection between the artist and the recipient.
