Fireback With The Arms Of Jacob Pelgrom (64x90 Cm)

Fireback with the arms of Jacob Pelgrom (1655-1713) born in Rouen, merchant and trader in this city, married in 1681 to Catherine Pigou (1656-1709). Of Protestant faith, he emigrated to Amsterdam, the city of origin of his parents, following the revocation of the Edict of Nantes with the agreement of Louis XIV, on August 27, 1685. He arrived in Bengal in 1685 and settled in Batavia, formerly Jakarta to become director of the East India Company from 1701 to 1705 and head of the tax department from 1708 until his death in 1713. His youngest daughter, Johanna Catharina (1686-1734) married Anthonij Huysmans (1688-1729), who also became director of the East India Company. The Huysmans-Pelgrom family became related to several of the leading families of the Dutch East Indies. Proof cast in the 19th century from a 17th century plaque with a semi-circular pediment, its coat of arms is stamped with the helm of a “gentleman of ancient race” crowned and flanked by lambrequins. On the crest is a pilgrim wearing a cloak, holding a bumblebee and wearing a hat adorned with pilgrim symbols, a scallop shell, on either side two bumblebees in the shape of a cross and a gourd. Coat of arms: Quarterly, 1 argent, eagle gules, beaked and membered azure, 2 argent, two weasels rampant and affronted gules, 3 argent, three wheels of six rays of sand, 4, Or to a pine torn Vert.
