"Fireplace Plate Dated 1698 From The 17th Century (97x87cm)"
17th century fireplace plate, dated 1698, the date of departure of the French troops from the principality of Montbéliard, returned to the overlord George II of Württemberg following the Treaty of Ryswick of 1697 (article 13), principality ceded by Spain to Louis XIV 20 years earlier. The county (former principality) of Montbéliard, the fiefs of Clerval and Passavant as well as the lordships of Granges, Héricourt, Blamont, Châtelot, Clémont and others are returned and under the protection of the Holy Roman Empire, hence these crowns of prince of the Holy Empire on either side of a turned Saint Andrew's cross. Two columns of Hercules, the major imperial emblem of Charles V and Franche-Comté, complete it. This plaque comes from Germéfontaine in the Doubs. In the last photo, a plaque with identical calligraphy and date from Amencey (Doubs) with the arms of Alexandre de Belot (Palasi P bibliography). Its weight is 94 kg.
