Rare Cast-iron Mantelpiece From The Orval Forges, Dated 16/87 (111x72 Cm)
Rare mantelpiece plaque dating from the 17th or 18th century, depicting a scene of the damned being tortured in eternal flames, cast at the Orval forges, dated 16/87 in the upper spandrels.
The medallion-shaped scene is encircled by a laurel wreath, with the corners featuring ornate spandrels. On either side, a frame of floral arabesques flanked by glazing beads extends the plaque.
Similar plaques are held in the collections of the Gaumais Museum in Virton and the Arlon Museum in Belgium.
Note a crack in the lower part that has been partially healed over time.
It weighs 155 kg.
