"Fireback With The Arms Of The Seigneury Of Rossignol (91x84 Cm)"
Fireback cast in the 17th century using a typical Cousances-les-Forges decor, attributed to the arms of the seigneury of Rossignol, located in Belgium, in the town of Tintigny in the county of Chiny, near 'Orval. This seigniory belongs from the 14th century to the Philomela family known as Rossignol or formerly Lorsignol and whose primitive castle dates from 1097. Two of the members of this family were abbot of Orval from 1429 to 1442 (see our last photo) and from 1453 to 1476. Then the seigniory passed among others to the Colmeys, the Wals, the Wahas and the Laittres family, by marriage. The latter, originally from Lorraine, was Lords of Rossignol from 1602 to 1817 at least. The family of Laittres, bears "Azure with a silver face charged with a nascent lion in mouth, armed and lampasse of the same, accompanied by four rings of gold, three in chief, one in point. In crest the lion emerging from the shield". Hence the crest on the coat of arms of Rossignol, the crowned lion for its affiliation to the Duchy of Luxembourg. Claude de Laittres, 1560-1637, married to Louise de Waha, lady heiress of Rossignol, received in 1608, the castle, the fortress and the seigniory of Rossignol by assignment from his father-in-law Gilles Waha and his mother-in-law Marguerite de Wal. The two intertwined Cs as a sign of allegiance to the Duke of Lorraine, Charles III (1545-1608). The restoration of the castle was undertaken from 1609 on the ruins of a fortress razed in 1558. At the lower upper angles, its ornamentation of architectural form is adorned with a decor of arcades, decorated with small coins, carried by pilasters and consoles, housing the coat of arms inscribed in a triumphal hat worn by two trained greyhounds and surmounted by an Inca mascaron from the mouth of which come out two cornucopias. Coat of arms: Or with three bands of gules (which is from Rossignol) with the rising lion of the shield (for from Laittres). His weight is 111 kg. It should be noted a small crack in the lower part. We remain interested in any information, even contradictory, about this plate.
