17th century cast iron fireplace plate. Trace of the wooden matrix used for the imprint in the sand in order to cast the cast iron to make the plate. A carved wooden plate was used (often made of several planks assembled with dowels) which was pressed into a bed of damp sand, the imprint served as a mold for casting the cast iron.
