Chinese Offering Or Wedding Basket, Carved Wood, Late 19th Century
This large multi-tiered offering or wedding basket from southern China is a beautiful example of late 19th-century vernacular craftsmanship. Entirely handmade from carved wood with forged iron fittings, it retains traces of its original red and black lacquer, showing a deep, dry patina that has evolved naturally over time. The piece was traditionally used to transport offerings or wedding gifts during ceremonial events in rural provinces such as Yunnan or Guangxi. Its construction with hand-forged hardware, the type of natural lacquer, and the oxidation of the iron are consistent with objects made before the widespread introduction of machine-made fittings in the early 20th century. The slight irregularities of the turned wooden tiers and the layering of natural pigments further confirm a pre-industrial production. Sculptural and quietly monumental, it brings the presence of true historic craftsmanship into a contemporary interior, bridging authenticity and timeless beauty.
