"James Arundel : "the Rainbow" 1931"
James Arundel (1875-1960): "The Rainbow", oil on double-sided panel 61 X 61 cm, mounted in a beautiful gilt frame with reverse slope of the time 74 X 74 cm (minor wear). Signed and dated 1931, the back presents a "Still Life with bouquet on an entablature" signed and dated 1935 (accidents). The quasi-expressionist power of this work with generous impasto and colorful but muted hues evokes an ending storm, the deserted beach sees a superb rainbow springing from the waters connecting the water to the tormented sky laden with clouds. The Artist born in Bradford (England), we learn from Bénézit, also exhibited in Paris, at the Salon des Artistes Français and at the Salon d'Automne.
