Blanche Odin : “the Virgin’s Lilies”
Blanche Odin (1865–1957) : “The Virgin’s Lilies,” watercolor, 29 × 19 cm, mounted with “museum-quality” glass by acream-colored passe-partout with a gilded bevel, set in a painted and gilded period frame with reverse-beveled edges, 43x 32 cm (minor imperfections).
The artist set up her easel in a corner of the garden where a bed of the Virgin’ssoars its immaculate blooms toward the blue sky.
If Redouté was the greatest flower watercolorist of the first half of the19th century, Blanche Odin is the greatest of the first half of the 20th.
While, of course, it was her roses that so richly and deservedly established her reputation, she excelled in depicting all kinds of flowers, as can be seen in the excellent books by MoniquePujo-Monfran or by visiting the Salies Museum in Bagnères-de-Bigorre.
