Gador : "the Suez Canal In 1892"

Gador (19th century): “The Suez Canal”, oil on canvas 24.5 X 32.5 cm, mounted in a black and gold NIII frame with reverse slope 34 X 42 cm. Fine network of cracks stabilized by re-fixing, flattened by tension bands. Signed and dated 1892, this somewhat naive and charming representation of the Canal is probably the work of a sailor or a colonial administrator. A historical document. A barely legible inscription on the chassis: “Un N… se g..ge dans le Canal de Suez”. We notice the unloading docks lined with a building on which floats a French flag in front of a panel "68", perhaps the mileage.
