A two-armed candleholder in silver-plated metal, Mid-Century Modern design, designed by Gio Ponti in the 1960s and executed by the Maison Christofle, Paris. Height approx. 10.5 cm. Marked on the underside Christofle France. Very good used condition.
The collaboration between Gio Ponti and Christofle — one of the most fruitful between an Italian architect-designer and a French silversmithing house in the 20th century — produced a series of table pieces that perfectly embody the transition from the strict modernism of the 1930s to the elegant lightness of Mid-Century design. The two-armed candleholder, with its interlocked curved arms, is characteristic of Ponti's formal vocabulary for Christofle: refined geometry, a linearity that excludes any superfluous ornament while retaining warmth.
Gio Ponti (Milan, 18 November 1891 – Milan, 16 September 1979), Italian architect, designer, painter and editor, is considered the most influential figure in 20th-century Italian modernism. Founder of the magazine Domus (1928), which he directed for more than forty years, he made it the global vehicle for modern art and design movements. Artistic director of the porcelain maker Richard Ginori in the 1920s, he was the author of several thousand creations — furniture, lighting, ceramics, silverware, appliances, buildings — in a formal diversity that defies categorisation. His Superleggera chair ("superlight"), produced by Cassina from 1957, is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein. Among his architectural works: the Pirelli Tower in Milan (1956) and the Denver Art Museum (1971), erected in 14 countries. Ponti / Christofle pieces are held in the collections of the Denver Art Museum (Flèche Candlesticks, circa 1930).
