An oil on canvas depicting two riders on the beach, by Manfred Schatz, signed lower right M. Schatz. The composition exemplifies the artist's defining theme: movement captured in the instant, and the relationship between man, animal and natural landscape, rendered in a luminous palette and a free brushstroke rooted in the tradition of plein air Impressionism.

Manfred Schatz (Bad Stepnitz on the Szczecin Lagoon, 1925 – Meerbusch, 2004) studied at the School of Applied Arts in Stettin and subsequently at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg, where he became at the age of 17 the youngest student at a German art school. After his captivity in Russia, from which he returned in 1949, he devoted himself entirely to his true calling: the instantaneous capture of animals in motion in their natural environment. True to the plein air Impressionist tradition, he developed charcoal drawings and oil studies on location, from which he later composed large, emotionally powerful studio paintings.

His work — animated by his distinctive language of attack and flight — also expresses a deep commitment to the preservation of wildlife and habitats threatened by human encroachment. Manfred Schatz was awarded the honorary title of Most Important Wildlife Painter, the German Federal Cross of Merit, and served as Professor of Painting at the University of Davenport, Iowa, USA.
