Beautiful watercolor representing the Place du Tertre in Paris. It is signed lower right A. Scheaffer, it is presented with a Marie-Louise and sold unframed. Henri Alexis Schaeffer, painter, illustrator born in Paris on August 9, 1900 and died on February 28, 1975 in Neuilly sur Seine. His father was an employee, his mother a seamstress, he married in 1921 Olga Toussaint, herself a painter. He will study painting under the leadership of Cormeron at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. He began his career in the 1930s with illustration, especially for young people with the editions of the "good press". He will illustrate several novels and collections of tales for Casteman. At his beginnings, he painted architectural studies of classical and religious monuments then he found his style by painting the grand boulevards as well as the Parisian districts with his cars, his gas-burner lamps, women in turn-of-the-century outfits.
