Table By Jansen

Artist: Jansen
A rare Art Deco table signed by JANSEN, featuring a structure that blends modern influences with neoclassical elegance, crafted in thick silver-plated bronze with two black opaline glass tops, an arched tripod base shaped like crooks and volutes adorned with rings, the legs ending in beaded rings and animal-shaped feet. In good condition; dimensions: 72.5 cm high x 61 cm wide.

Founded in Paris in 1880 by the Dutch decorator Jean-Henri Jansen, Maison Jansen occupies a unique place in the history of interior design. Far more than just a design studio, it was one of the first firms to conceive of design as a comprehensive endeavor, structured around a genuine brand identity. From its very beginnings, Maison Jansen has distinguished itself through an eclectic approach, capable of blending historical references—notably 18th-century France, the Empire style, and European decorative traditions—with modern innovations. This ability to combine heritage and modernity is one of the cornerstones of its success. The firm does not limit itself to producing interior designs; it conceives complete environments, integrating interior architecture, furniture, textiles, lighting, objets d’art, and sometimes even the smallest details of domestic staging. Throughout the 20th century, Maison Jansen developed an exceptional international presence. Its activities expanded across Europe, Latin America, North America, and the Middle East. This global reach enabled it to serve a cosmopolitan clientele comprising wealthy families, political figures, institutions, and major corporations. The firm thus earned a reputation based not only on the sophistication of its projects but also on its ability to adapt its aesthetic language to local cultures and contexts. Maison Jansen is often regarded as the first global design firm to have transformed its name into an international brand. This evolution was pivotal: it foreshadowed the contemporary operations of major interior design and design firms, capable of developing a recognizable aesthetic while working on projects located in different countries. Its model was based on professional organization, collaboration among numerous specialists, and the creation of a vast repertoire of forms, materials, and references. The firm’s history is also linked to several major figures in 20th-century interior design. Among them, Stéphane Boudin played a decisive role in the creation of famous interiors, particularly in the United States and the United Kingdom. His work exemplifies the Jansen method: a sophisticated, theatrical, and refined composition in which furniture, colors, works of art, and architectural elements are conceived as parts of a coherent whole. The influence of Maison Jansen thus extends beyond the history of luxurious interiors alone. It contributed to the professionalization of the interior design profession and the emergence of an integrated approach to design projects. By combining production, consulting, staging, and international distribution, it helped establish the principles of contemporary interior design. Maison Jansen thus remains a key reference point for understanding the birth of holistic design. Its legacy lies as much in the quality of its interiors as in the modernity of its business model: transforming creative expertise into a recognizable, exportable, and enduring signature.
