Joe Descomps (1869–1950) Pair Of Art Deco Sculptures, 1925

Artist: Joe Descomps (1869-1950)
A rare pair of Art Deco-era statues from around 1925, signed by the sculptor Joe Descomps (1869–1950)  Allegorical figures in ivory-colored glazed ceramic with a fine crackle finish, depicting Pomona and the faun Pan resting on faceted pedestals featuring bas-reliefs adorned with cherubs and bouquets of flowers. Both sculptures are signed by Joe Descomps on the terrace and by the manufacturer on the base. In good condition, with a few chips in the glaze. Dimensions: 35 cm high x 10 cm wide.

Joseph CORMIER was born on January 18, 1869, and died on April 24, 1950; Joseph-Jules-Emmanuel Descomps changed his name to Joseph Cormier after World War I.
A sculptor, engraver, and master goldsmith, Joe Descomps—who exhibited at the Chicago World’s Fair—was trained at the Falguières workshop. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1891 to 1937.
A highly renowned sculptor, his favorite subject was the female nude, a subject he masterfully brought to life, primarily working in bronze but also in ivory. Some works were created using the terracotta technique, which required great mastery of modeling and line work. Also worth mentioning are a few automobile mascots, always rendered with the great finesse characteristic of this sculptor.
Joe Descomps worked with the finest bronze foundries, such as Susse Frères and Etling Paris
