D. Alonzo (xix-xxe) Art Nouveau Bronze Statue, 1900

An elegant, finely chiseled gilded bronze sculpture from the late 19th century, circa 1900, by the artist Dominique ALONZO (19th–20th centuries), signed “D. Alonzo” on the pedestal. An Orientalist-inspired composition featuring a classical female figure embodying the attributes of Hebe, holding the ewer and the cup of divine nectar; she is dressed in a sumptuous, antiquity-inspired costume whose soft drapery elegantly highlights the grace of her posture, her waist is adorned with a Jambiya dagger tucked into her belt, symbolizing honor and prestige; she rests on an oblong terrace decorated with heart-strip motifs. In good overall condition, with beautiful gilding; dimensions: 40 cm high × 18 cm wide.

Dominique Alonzo was a French sculptor and a student of Alexandre Falguière; she exhibited several times at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris until 1926. Her bronze sculptures are distinguished by their rich detail. The record price for one of her works was $33,410, achieved at a Sotheby’s auction in London in 2017.
