Small Bronze Statuette Depicting A Child Sitting On A Sphinx, 19th Century. France.
A charming little 19th-century bronze sculpture depicting a child sitting on the back of a sphinx. The child holds a stylus in his right hand and was likely holding a sheet of paper or a notebook in his left hand. The child is nude, with a stole draped over his right shoulder, reaching down to the ground. The sphinx is depicted in a hieratic style. Its right paw is slightly raised. It wears the classic Egyptian headdress of the pharaohs. The piece as a whole is charming, very well balanced, and has a beautiful light patina. The base is made of terracotta, painted to resemble red marble. A lovely illusion.
The statuette dates from the early 19th century, perhaps from the period following Bonaparte’s expedition to Egypt.
