The painting on offer, of exceptional quality and artistic merit, is a work created toward the end of the 17th century by an artist from the Roman area. It depicts the rare Gospel episode of Christ’s temptations when, after his baptism, he was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert, where he remained for forty days, tempted by the devil.
In particular, we see the conclusion of this episode, where a jubilant host of angels approaches to refresh Christ, victorious yet exhausted from having resisted the temptations; in the background of the scene is a rocky cliff from which a stream flows, perhaps alluding to the waters of the Jordan and thus to his baptism.
Christ is depicted kneeling, with his hands raised in prayer and gratitude, surrounded by four large winged angels, one of whom is serving him food while the others watch him devoutly; another of them is completely bowed before him, in a gesture of homage to his will and strength in resisting evil. At the top, completing the composition, a group of joyful cherubs in flight are preparing to hold up a large basket overflowing with fruit.
There is now no trace of the diabolical figures who tempted him; the setting is heavenly, and this jubilant display of angels and cherubs, the water gushing from the rock, and the beam of light piercing the clouds, all amplify this sense of spirituality.
An analysis of the stylistic and figurative characteristics reveals that the work belongs to the Roman school of the high 17th century, capable of expressing a refined style and successfully blending the Baroque language—opulent by definition—with elements of classical influence.
In particular, the work can be traced to the circle of painters active in the orbit of Pietro Berrettini, known as Pietro da Cortona, one of the leading figures of the Baroque school, whose Roman workshop consisted of a thriving group of students, influenced by the master and disseminators of his artistic vision.
Among them, we can mention Guillaume Courtois, known as “il Borgognone” (Saint-Hippolite 1628 – Rome 1679), Ciro Ferri (Rome 1633 – 1689), and finally Lazzaro Baldi (Pistoia 1622 – Rome 1703), with whom this painting shares a strong stylistic resemblance.
The painting is in excellent condition. It is set in a 19th-century gilded wooden box frame.
