Framed Antique Shahsavan Textile Panel – Persia, Circa 1870

A superb fragment of an antique Shahsavan tribal textile, attributed to the second half of the 19th century, circa 1870, originating from the nomadic weaving traditions of northwestern Persia and the Azerbaijan region.

Handwoven from wool, this piece features a traditional composition of repeating geometric medallions, stylized motifs, and angular ornaments, in a beautiful harmony of burgundy red, indigo blue, weathered green, and ivory.

Its particularly elongated shape evokes an ancient side panel of a mafrash, a textile chest once used by nomadic peoples to transport and store their personal belongings.

The weave exhibits characteristics that may correspond to the traditional Soumak technique, subject to further examination.

The fragment is currently displayed under glass, on a dark background that highlights the richness of its composition and its historical irregularities, within a decorative frame with an antique gold patina.
