Pair Of Celadon Porcelain Kerosene Lamps – Maison Gagneau, Late 19th Century

Pair of Celadon Porcelain Kerosene Lamps – Maison Gagneau, Late 19th Century

An elegant pair of antique oil lamps made of pale green celadon porcelain, featuring white floral decoration in slight relief, with gilded bronze mounts and frosted glass globes.

The mounts bear a manufacturer’s plaque inscribed with “GAGNEAU – 115 R. LAFAYETTE”, corresponding to the renowned Maison Gagneau, a Parisian manufacturer of lighting fixtures and bronze lighting accessories.

Founded in Paris in 1800, the Gagneau company distinguished itself particularly in the 19th century for the quality of its lamps, chandeliers, wall sconces, and other lighting fixtures.

This pair, likely made in the late 19th century, features an elegant Louis XVI-style design.

The celadon-green glazed porcelain bodies are adorned with delicate white floral bouquets in slight relief. Their baluster shape, with a bulging body and slender neck, is accentuated by finely crafted gilded bronze mounts.

The decorative bases feature classical ornamentation, while the upper sections are embellished with openwork galleries bearing the Gagneau mark.

Each lamp is topped by a large, flared globe made of frosted glass, decorated with translucent motifs and finished with a scalloped border.

Originally kerosene-powered, these lamps have been converted for electric lighting.

Their soft color, floral designs, and elegant gilded frames make them a refined decorative set, particularly suited for a console table, a dresser, or a classic living room.
