Bronze Holy Water Bucket, Model 1551

Bronze holy water bucket, also known as a situle, dated 1551 and adorned with rich religious relief decoration.

The body of the vessel features several religious scenes within arcades, including a depiction of the Virgin and Child, surrounded by sacred figures. The upper part bears a Latin inscription related to the phrase “Iustus ut palma florebit,” which can be translated as “The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree.” The movable handle is secured by two fasteners in the shape of stylized heads, lending the piece a highly decorative character.

Although the piece is dated 1551, comparable examples are often described as works from the late 19th or early 20th century, inspired by an older Renaissance model. We therefore cautiously present it as a bronze situle based on a 16th-century religious model.

In good overall condition, with an antique patina, signs of wear, oxidation, and minor casting irregularities consistent with its age and material.
