Bien Hoa Vase From The Indochina Period, Featuring Scenes Of Battle
Artist: Ecole De Bien Hoa
Indochina-period Bien Hoa vase depicting battle scenes, 20th century.
The Biên Hòa School of Applied Arts was founded in 1903 in southern Vietnam (in Dong Nai Province, near Saigon) by the French colonial authorities, notably at the initiative of Georges Maspéro.
Despite the upheavals of war, master potters and students trained in the school’s tradition continue to produce glazed stoneware pieces, perpetuating the unique blend of local Vietnamese techniques, Chinese influences, Khmer influences, and French contributions (ceramics dating from around the 1950s, such as those held at the Cernuschi Museum).
