Brass Snuffbox Engraved With A Runique Calendar, 18th Century

Scandinavian brass snuffbox engraved with a runic perpetual calendar. This type of medieval calendar is based on the lunar cycle over a 19-year period. It was still widely used in the Nordic countries—particularly in Sweden—until the 19th century. If you look closely at the decoration, you’ll notice small symbols intertwined with the letters of the calendar: a cow, a key, a duck… these refer to the major holidays of the year. This piece is rare enough to be found in a museum. A similar piece can be found at the Sörmland Museum in Nyköping, Sweden, under inventory number SLM7925 1.
