Dying Alexander, Large 19th-century Plaster Cast
Dying Alexander — Large plaster bust on a patinated pedestal, 19th century
Patinated plaster bust based on the ancient head known as “Dying Alexander,” housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Measuring 72cm in height, same as original sculpture, this example stands out for its rather unusual size.
The head is tilted back and turned to one side; the raised gaze and slightly parted lips give the face an expression of pain. A full head of hair with wavy strands follows the movement of the neck.
The model is a Greek sculpture from the late 2nd century B.C., supplemented by later restorations. First mentioned in 1550 in a Roman collection, then brought to Florence around 1580, this work was admired and widely reproduced for the power of its expression. Long considered a portrait of Alexander the Great on his deathbed, it retains its traditional name, although this identification is no longer accepted today.
This magnificent 19th-century example reflects the popularity of casts based on ancient models, which were found in artists’ studios, drawing schools, and private homes.
