Baroque Cabinet, Munich, Dated 1781
Large two-door Baroque cabinet veneered in walnut, standing on compressed and profiled ball feet, with elaborate Rococo carved decoration and rich strapwork marquetry. The cabinet is crowned by a curved, profiled pediment and flanked on the sides by canted corners with pilasters. The carvings in the form of rocailles and volutes function as capitals inspired by classical forms. The marquetry on the sides features panel-like frames and compass rose decorations. The doors, with a carved central closing strip, are each divided into four dynamically shaped fields. The lower fields are raised, decorated with square parquetry, and bordered at the top by applied moldings with volutes. The upper fields, in contrast, are framed by profiled moldings and rocaille carvings in the corners. Strapwork marquetry surrounds the asymmetrically designed cartouches bearing the monogram “MW” and the date “1781”.
