Marble Column Adorned With The Attributes Of Mercury, Italy, Probably Florence, Early 19th Century
A cylindrical column in white marble rests on a square base with a profiled foot. The otherwise smooth front face of the shaft is decorated with a relief depicting a winged helmet surmounting a staff of Asclepius, flanked by harpoons symbolizing the attributes of the god Mercury. The capital with a meander motif completes this early 19th-century work. Provenance: The column comes from the collection of the renowned Florentine art dealer Giovanni Pratesi.
