A Six-panel Rakuchū Rakugai-zu Folding Screen Painted On A Gold-leaf Ground
A Japanese six-panel byobu of the Rakuchu Rakugai-zu genre, painted on paper with natural pigments and gold leaf, depicting an expansive bird’s-eye view of the city of Kyoto. Delicate bands of golden clouds drift across the panorama, structuring the composition and revealing glimpses of the different districts of the capital.
Seen from above, temples, shrines, bridges, waterways, merchant districts and residences unfold across the landscape, animated by numerous small figures engaged in scenes of everyday life.
The subject belongs to the tradition of Rakuchū Rakugai-zu (“Scenes in and around the Capital”), devoted to views of Kyoto. Several of the city’s principal landmarks can be identified within the panorama, including the Kamo River, the Shijō district, Gion with Yasaka Shrine, and the hills of Higashiyama.
