Large Polychrome Earthenware Pitcher With Mythological Decor And Serpent-shaped Handle – 19th Century
Spectacular ceremonial ewer in polychrome earthenware, in the Italian Renaissance style, likely dating from the second half of the 19th century.
This imposing piece, 70 cm tall, features an elegant, slender silhouette resting on a circular pedestal.
It is distinguished by its remarkable handle in the shape of a spotted serpent, with particularly decorative coils, as well as by its long spout accented with orange-yellow enamel.
The body is adorned with a polychrome mythological scene depicting several figures in a seascape, framed by an ornamental frieze.
The entire design stands out against a deep cobalt-blue background, richly decorated with foliage, grotesques, mascarons, and plant motifs in the style of Italian Renaissance majolica.
The pedestal also features a design of mascarons and stylized ornaments.
A mark painted in blue, resembling a crowned monogram, appears beneath the base. Its identification remains to be determined. An Italian origin, possibly Neapolitan, is a possibility.
This ewer captivates with its monumental proportions, the richness of its decoration, and the originality of its composition.
