Damascened Writing Set, Pencil Holder, Japan, Circa 1900
Artist: Att; Komai
Dimensions: 6× 1.3 × 0.7 cm
A tiny, exquisite case—a rare model—for the flat pencils used circa 1900, whose tips needed to be protected;
Exquisitely fine damascene work in bright gold contrasting with black lacquer, in the style of renowned artist Komai, unsigned.
Three birds and large Tokyo chrysanthemums vie for space on the small decorated surface, between two lotus friezes.
Good condition, no flaws, with a ring for attaching it to a chain…
I do not have the original pencil model; the one shown here is slightly smaller, but very useful for understanding use of object, which is not often seen!
Good overall condition, with normal wear. No flaws.
