Giuseppe Antonio Luchi (lucca, 1709–1774). Madonna And Child
Artist: Giuseppe Antonio Luchi (lucca, 1709 - 1774)
Giuseppe Antonio Luchi (Lucca, 1709–1774)
Madonna and Child
Signed and dated on the reverse “G.A.L. 1762”
Oil on canvas, 40x30 cm
Set in a contemporary carved and gilded wooden frame
This small and refined painting is the work of the Lucca-based painter Giuseppe Antonio Luchi, known as “il Dieciminio,” who created it in 1762, as he himself noted on the back of the canvas along with the initials of his name. This signature is typical of the painter and can be found in many of his works.
Luchi’s painting is distinguished by an intimate and conversational style, characterized by a quick, light touch and a sober, essential line. The painting reveals clear influences from Bolognese painting. Luchi was, in fact, associated with Brugieri, a student of Gian Gioseffo Dal Sole in Bologna, and trained in both Bologna and Venice, where he joined Tiepolo’s workshop.
There is no definitive evidence of his activity prior to the early 1760s, a period that coincides with his production of works intended for churches in Lucca.
