17th-century Painter From Lucca. The Holy Face Of Lucca (119.5 X 94.5 Cm)
17th-century painter from Lucca
The Holy Face of Lucca
Oil on canvas, 119.5 x 94.5 cm (original stretcher)
The painting is a rare artistic testimony linked to the veneration of the wooden Crucifix in the Church of San Martino in Lucca. Its size makes it an important work of art intended for collectors, foundations, museums, or ecclesiastical sites in the Lucca area.
The work can be dated to after 1657, the year in which the goldsmith Ambrogio Giannoni created the gold collar intended to adorn the bust of the sculpture. Two years earlier, the same goldsmith had crafted the sumptuous gold crown based on a design by the Lucca painter Girolamo Scaglia.
Only a few other ancient paintings depicting this iconography are known today; among the best known are the following:
Giovanni Domenico Ferrucci (1619–1669): Lucca, Museo dell’Opera del Duomo
Pier Filippo Mannucci (1601–1669): Lucca, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio
Paolo Biancucci (1596–1650): Viareggio, Church of San Paolino
Francesco Buonamici (1596–1677): Rome, Church of SS. Croce e Bonaventura dei Lucchesi
