Clemente Ruta (parma, 1685-1767). Sketch

Clemente Ruta (Parma, 1685-1767)
Triumph of Virtue Led by Painting, Poetry, and Music and Crowned by Fame (Sketch)
Oil on paper (laid down on canvas), 33 x 23 cm (paper); 35 x 26 cm (canvas)
Within a 19th-century frame

This work is attributed to Clemente Ruta (Parma, 1685-1767), a painter active between Parma, Rome, and Naples, where, in 1741, he was called to serve at the court of Charles of Bourbon as a chamber artist. Ruta's paintings are characterized by a pictorial style midway between the composed and solemn Emilian classicism and the Roman Baroque.

The work under consideration is a sketch for the painting exhibited in Rome at Bertolami on December 4, 2017. It was mistakenly assigned to Ercole Graziani but was later attributed to Ruta by Crispo and Cirillo in their monograph on the painter (A. Crispo and G. Cirillo, Clemente Ruta, Grafiche Step, 2012, pp. 118-119, Cat. 49).

It should be noted that the surviving sketches by Ruta are extremely rare, consisting of only about ten examples.
