Pasqualino Rossi (Vicenza, 1641 - Rome, 1722)
The Schoolmaster
Oil on canvas, 19 x 24 cm
This composition is known in two other autograph versions held in Copenhagen, Statens Museum for Kunst (canvas, 32 x 37 cm) and Genoa, Wannenes, March 21, 2018, lot 633 (canvas, 18 x 25 cm).
Pasqualino Rossi was a painter originally from Vicenza but active in the Marche and Rome, where he was appreciated and sought after by major local and international patrons. Rossi was a painter of sacred themes, alongside a large and entertaining production of genre scenes. He fell into oblivion after his death, and for almost three centuries virtually nothing was written about him, and the authorship of his high-quality works was attributed to other illustrious artists. Only starting from the 1920s was his work rediscovered, thanks to the attention paid to it by scholars of the calibre of Roberto Longhi and Federico Zeri.
