Coastal Landscape with Architecture
Oil on canvas, 36 x 43 cm
Within an antique frame
The Carpi painter Alessandro Brusati was a pupil of Antonio Consetti at the Modena Academy and later worked alongside Giuseppe Barnaba Solieri, known as Fra Stefano da Carpi. Specializing in interior decoration and perspective squaring, he also created, according to his biographer Eustachio Cabassi (18th century, ed. 1986, pp. 29-30), oil paintings of architecture on canvas. His modus operandi remained unchanged: he typically employed simple architectural elements in ruins, depicted in foreshortening and set against seascapes, with small figures in the foreground. Even the color scheme remained the same: soft, pastel hues typical of the Rocaille style. It is also evident in his works that the Carpi native was not unfamiliar with the Venetian architectural caprices of the so-called Master of the Blue Mountains. His paintings are preserved at the Civic Museum of Carpi, the Civic Museums of Modena, and the Gonzaga Civic Museum in Novellara.
