Nicolas Lancret workshop. Oil on canvas, "Gallant Scene at the Edge of the Woods," unsigned. On the reverse, on two of the stretcher bars, are old inscriptions recalling the artist's association with Nicolas Lancret. 31.4 x 43 cm (sight size). French School. Nicolas Lancret (1690-1743). Beyond the influence of Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) on the young Parisian painter's art, Nicolas Lancret maintained a distinct style that allowed him to achieve rapid success. "Lancret was accustomed to painting his landscapes from nature or from sketches he made from nature. It was only in the last years of his life that his friends persuaded him to stop copying live models with his students" (Excerpt from the Bénézit Dictionary of Painters and Sculptors). Without a doubt, our painting, which dates from the first half of the 18th century, was painted on location by a student who accompanied the master in the forests of Île-de-France. Unframed. Relined. Good condition. 2900 euros.
