16th-century Furniture Finial
A 16th-century furniture ornament depicting the goddess Minerva, or Athena as she is known to the Greeks. She bears all the attributes of this goddess: a female warrior figure, helmet, spear, and shield. This sculpture, originally mounted on the side of a piece of furniture, was carved from a piece of walnut. It shows signs of wood-boring insect damage, which in no way affects its structural integrity. There are signs of restoration on the spear shaft. This object has undergone extensive treatment.
