Sun Mask – Burkina Faso, Circa 1970.
This is a mask (of the Bwa people): its design is characteristic:
a large disk carved with concentric bands of triangles, circled eyes, a small
round mouth, and a long, protruding central ridge. The dancer held it by the
small handle at the bottom. The name “sun” does not imply a solar cult
; it was intended for festivities.
In Bwa society, a family’s identity and continued well-being are
often linked to a nature spirit. The mask may invoke a spirit
that, in a mythical past, is said to have saved the clan.
Light wood (banyan?), with wear on the polychrome paint.
