Chiseled bronze, decorated with two main chimeras and two parrots. Patina from use – 18th century. Probably Rajasthan (Northwest India): the decoration depicts mythical birds facing each other, derived from late Mughal vocabulary. Openwork and highly textured: scales, punched plumage. These pieces were often linked to colonial trade; they are referred to as "Anglo-Indian" furniture. In this instance, undoubtedly a chest. Mounted in the 1970s.
