Large Earthenware Planter With Raised Enamel Work And Japanese-style Decoration—late 19th Century
Artist: De Caranza
Large rectangular planter with sloping sides and a fan-shaped profile, made of earthenware with raised enamel decorations on a crackled turquoise background covered with branches of cherry blossoms (probably circa 1880).
The main sides feature cartouches of various shapes. On one side, there is an eggplant-colored, cloud-shaped cartouche depicting three cranes in flight against the moon, and a white, fan-shaped cartouche depicting ducks among reeds and lotus flowers.
On the other, a multilobed aubergine-colored cartouche with a pheasant and flowers, and a white, gourd-shaped cartouche with three mice in a snowy landscape near a plum branch.
The short sides feature a cobalt-blue cartouche with a kingfisher and bindweed, and a crackled-gray cartouche with swallows on a branch.
A Japanese-inspired design in the style of the Longwy enamels and the Vieillard factory in Bordeaux, where Amédée de Caranza (1843–1914) worked. Very discreet needle-engraved signature: “A. de Caranza.” The motif of mice in the snow also appears on plates from the Vieillard factory designed by Amédée de Caranza.
In perfect condition, with typical original crackle glaze.
H. 27 cm / W. 56 cm / D. 13 cm
