German Reservist's Water Bottle (reservistenflasche)
Prussian reservist’s canteen. This is a model adopted duringthe reign of Wilhelm II between the wars of 1870 and World War I. This one can be dated to around 1900.
The glass flask is protected by two half-shells of metal, which open via a hinge. The front is painted. The back, made of brass, features a ribbed pattern. The stopper is topped by the imperial eagle with outstretched wings. A braided cord allows it to be carried.
The standard model could be personalized with the regiment number, the hometown and the owner’s name. This one belonged to a veteran of the 84th from Darmstadt (State of Hesse). However, the band intended for personalization with a name remains blank, with noname inscribed.
The painted side features all the traditional symbols and inscriptions: Parole Heimat (Native Land), Res.hat.ruh. (Reservist at rest), Wir dienten treu dem Vaterland (We served the fatherland faithfully), Andenk a.m. Dienstzeit (Memento of my service). They are arranged around a barrel straddled by two merry fellows in uniform, topped by the crown of the Holy Roman Empire.
