Evaristo Martín Freire command baton with case. Tortoiseshell, gold, metal, etc. Spain, mid-20th century.
Interior lined case or box, with fastenings on the front and a plaque on the top bearing the inscription: "The province of Las Palmas / grateful for the most meritorious work / accomplished by the excellent Mr. DON EVARISTO MARTIN FREIRE / during his term of office as civil governor of the said province / has the honor to offer him this symbol / of an authority exercised with dignity / brilliance and efficiency". Evaristo Martín Freire (Piedrabuena, Ciudad Real, 1904-Madrid, 1972) was a Spanish politician from a family of large landowners and breeders, as well as mayors. He studied pharmacy at the Central University of Madrid. In 1931, he joined the Spanish Agrarian Party, then volunteered for Francisco Franco's army. After the war, he returned to Ciudad Real, where he joined the provincial leadership of the Spanish Falange. He was appointed Civil Governor of Las Palmas in 1951, a post he relinquished when he was appointed Civil Governor of the province of Alicante in 1954. The ceremonial baton, of civil origin, features a wooden handle covered in tortoiseshell, a metal tip and a handle on which Evaristo's initials are interlaced in colored enamel, as well as two coats of arms on the front (both representing Las Palmas de Gran Canaria) adorned with vegetal and other motifs. It is surmounted by a band adorned with vegetal motifs and precious stones, as well as another band of precious stones above a laurel wreath serving as a lower finial. No hallmark is visible on the metal.
