Purchase raffle. Conscription is institutionalized in France in 1798 at the General initiativedu JOURDAN. From 1804 to 1903, conscripts are invited to get their assignment after a draw. Initially, the draw determines who goes and who does not leave, the lowest numbers being deemed "fit for service." In 1872, the function of the draw is changed: the lowest numbers are a five-year service, the other only one year.
