Jef Verbrak (1924–2007), “lyrical Abstraction,” Belgian School
Jef Verbrak is a Belgian artist born in Brussels in 1924.
He was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts.
Throughout his career, he experimented with various painting styles and techniques.
He is best known for his abstract works associated with Lyrical Abstraction as well as Brutalism—a movement for which he used all kinds of materials in his creations, such as resins, epoxy, plastics, and wood flour.
During this period, he also created several pieces of furniture and lighting fixtures made of resin.
Verbrak’s works are characterized by a strong presence of color, as well as texture and light. He has exhibited in numerous galleries both in Belgium and abroad.
He participated in the group exhibition “Lyrical Abstraction in Belgium” in 1985.
He achieved recognition in 1992 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Charleroi, his adopted city, thanks to a retrospective dedicated to him: “Verbrak’s Work in Charleroi.”
The work offered for sale, an oil on canvas, is a piece of lyrical abstraction dating from 1960—that is, before his so-called Brutalist period.
A blend of light tones and richer colors, accentuated by subtle textural highlights.
This painting is framed in a new, custom-made solid wood frame.
