Pierre Ambrogiani (1907-1985), The Painter's Palette, Oil On Canvas, Signed, Certificate
Artist: Pierre Ambrogiani (1907-1985)
Pierre Ambrogiani was born in Ajaccio, but his family soon decided to settle in Marseille. From then on, his youth was that of the working-class children of the southern port city. He developed an artistic voice from a very young age, showing a strong affinity for drawing and sculpting. At the age of 12, he became a "little telegraph operator" in Marseille, and the following year exhibited his figurines in a nativity scene during an annual meeting of postal workers. In 1923, at the age of 16, the painter Auzias, captivated by his colorful figures, offered him a place alongside his exhibition at the Langlois goldsmith's workshop. Gradually, the young artist became a pioneer of a Provençal style of painting known as "action painting," due, among other things, to the direct expression of materials in his canvases. In 1937, he took the plunge and devoted himself entirely to painting, notably participating in the Salon d'Automne, of which he became a member. He participated in numerous group exhibitions of contemporary French art, both in France and abroad, from 1948 to 1980, including in Paris, Marseille, Toulouse, New York, London, Oxford, Philadelphia, Turin, and Zurich. Over the years, the artist Pierre Ambrogianide became a renowned figure in France and an internationally acclaimed personality, proudly representing the South of France. His works reveal a modern Provence, where forms dissolve into color. Increasingly moving towards a simplification of form and line, the artist approaches a deliberately figurative abstraction.
