Description

An impressive pair of decorative Carrara marble basins, each resting on a matching tall cylindrical pedestal. The set features a balanced architectural composition, directly inspired by classical ornamental motifs and particularly well-suited to a symmetrical display.

The pedestals rest on wide circular bases composed of several concentric moldings. Their cylindrical shafts are adorned with a sculpted decoration of broad oblique motifs in relief, forming a regular helical pattern. The upper section is accentuated by a prominent series of moldings and culminates in an overhanging circular rim supporting the bowl.

Each bowl features a turned foot with a heavily molded profile, surmounted by a deep, wide-open bowl. The lower part of the body is decorated with a succession of large, ovoid gadroons arranged regularly around the entire circumference. The upper rim is punctuated by a frieze of rectangular denticles in high relief, framed by successive circular moldings. The alternation of smooth surfaces, godrons, and moldings creates an interesting interplay of light and shadow that emphasizes the sculptural character of the piece.

The basins and their pedestals consist of several stacked, detachable elements, making them particularly easy to move and install.

Technique and Materials

The set is crafted from white Carrara marble, displaying the characteristic shades, gray veining, and natural variations of the stone. The various elements are cut, turned, and carved to create the moldings, gadroons, and twisted decorative elements visible on the pedestals.

Condition

Condition as shown in the photographs. Traces of wear, patina, slight soiling, surface marks, minor irregularities, and the marble’s natural veining are present. The interior of the basins also shows signs of use. No details have been intentionally concealed in the photographic presentation.
